The San Diego Folk Heritage Festival

The San Diego Folk Heritage Festival's reputation is growing-and for good reason.  This year's guest artists are Byron Berline, internationally known bluegrass fiddler, and his nephew Barry "Bones" Patton, Cathy Barton and Dave Para, the versatile duo known for their collection of tunes from the Civil War era, and Katy Moffatt whose music might be classified as Nashville blues folk ballads.  Whatever it's called, she makes you want to hear more of it.
The festival kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with workshops, dances, jams and concerts on two stages until 5:00, a dinner break, and an evening concert featuring more from our guest artists and a few surprises.
Many workshops focus on music education with a children's singing workshop by Strangewoods, Tom Paxton's children's songs by Jean Hibben and Stefanie Escander, and Sam Hinton's children's concert plus a program called "Stories with Songs in Them and Songs with Stories in Them."Nicki Birkett gives a string instrument primer for teachers . Other workshops include Hawaiian slack key guitar with Kent Lee Brisby, bones with Barry "Bones" Patton, barbershop harmony, cello and viola, hobo songs with Fred Starner, and brother duets with Jerry Schreiber.
Outdoor concerts include Larry and JoAnn Sinclair, Johnnie Walker, Heel Stone-Celtic Band, Los Amigos, Shenanigans, The Continental Drifters, and many, many others.  Dances of all kinds will be held in the auditorium.
The festival is at Children's School in La Jolla on May 12th.

SDFH is proud to present:

Deborah Liv Johnson, and Peggy Watson

These two extraordinary singer-songwriters have been best friends since they met in the Old Time Cafe in 1981.  Peggy Watson, recognized as one of San Diego's leading acoustic singer/songwriters, has been embraced by the jazz and pop world as well.  With a wide vocal range, her smooth, emotional voice moves between contemporary folk stylings, smokey jazz, or powerful pop ballads.  The San Diego Union Tribune wrote, "Peggy Watson's music is filled with simple pleasures and reflects years of hard work, empathic observation and an easy familiarity with the tough compromises people make every day."  Songs from all four of her CDs have been featured on public radio and college stations across the country.

Born to missionary parents in Tanzania, East Africa, Deborah Liv Johnson attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, known to have "the best college choir in the world."  She developed a presence as a singer/songwriter at the campus coffeehouse and downtown clubs.  Graduating with a degree in creative writing, Johnson moved to San Diego.  Image-rich lyrics and well-crafted melodies became her trademark.  She also began work on the blues.  Her audience has responded to the eclectic nature of her music.  Johnson released 7 CDs on her own Mojave Sun Records label.
Over the years, Johnson has opened concerts for various name artists and sung the National Anthem for Hillary Clinton.

Tanya Savory

Tanya
Savory      Rounder/Philo recording artist Tanya Savory has gained national attention as one of the best performing songwriters on the circuit.  Her songwriting, combining the best elements of folk, country and bluegrass, has won numerous awards including Kerrville, MerleFest and Napa Valley.  Since her music appeals to such a broad fan base, in 1999 she found herself with a hit on Bluegrass radio (Dale Ann Bradley's recording of Reason Enough) and on Christine Lavin's Top Ten Albums List (Town to Town).
Regarding her current release, Town to Town, Acoustic Guitar Magazine said:  "Her songs are finely tuned slices of life comparable to the work of exceptional songwriters such as Bill Morrissey and John Prine.  Savory also has an elegant voice reminiscent of Mary Chapin Carpenter and a strong guitar style that does it all justice."

Fred Starner and Nathan Weldon

Recapture the spirit of riding the rail with Hobo Minstrel Fred Starner.  "Banjo Fred" was inspired to learn about hobo music and folklore after seeing Pete Seeger in concert.  In 1969, Starner and his wife were among the early crew members of Seeger's Clearwater Sloop Project, a floating folk music show that traveled New York's Hudson River to call attention to environmental issues.  In the last decade, Starner has performed at a number of National Hobo Association Festivals & folk festivals, public TV and radio, coffeehouses, schools, benefits, rallies, and retirement homes.  For years he played with Fred Kirkpatrick, a front-line fighter for civil rights.  Starner has produced various panels and workshops at Folk Alliance and has appeared as a solo performer at college campuses throughout California.

Nathan Weldon     For this double feature, we bring you singer-songwriter Nathan Welden.  Nathan is a native of San Diego whose music represents diverse influences in folk, country, pop and R&B.;  Nathan's goal is to touch the audience with the emotion expressed in his songs, as he has often done at Mikey's Coffee House.
