1983:
Awarded a Gold Record for the album Now I'm Easy.

1985:
Awarded the title "Most Australian Australian Of The Year" by the Newcastle and Hunter Valley Australia Day Association.

April 1986:
A.P.R.A. Gold Award for Song Of The Year ("The Band Played Waltzing Matilda").

August 1986:
Recipient of the Australian Peace Medal from the Australian Government.

1987:
Received the Order Of Australia for "services to entertainment."

1988:
Received the Tamworth Songwriters Association "Tex Morton Award." An award given to non-Australian born artists who have made a significant contribution to Australian music.

January 1991:
Winner of the Tamworth Songwriters Association Award for "Best Comedy/Novelty Song Of The Year" ("Silly Slang Song.")

April 1991:
Australian Entertainment "MO" Awards - Folk Performer Of The Year

1992:
The Peebles Callants Club Honorary Membership. Awarded "in recognition of his achievements as a songwriter and Folk-singer of International renown." (A Callant is someone who is supposed to represent all that is good about the town of Peebles, Scotland and acts as an ambassador for that town wherever he travels.)

1999:
Port Fairy Folk Festival Artist of the Year

2001:
Australian Humanist of the Year
